The Little Engine That Could

I will be referring to 1001 Children's Books You Must Read Before You Die as The Book from here on out.

According to The Book, The Little Engine That Could retold by Watty Piper was a Sunday school story originally written by Mary C. Jacobs. The pictures are bright, colorful and scenic. The animals look like stuffed animals with their arms and legs sewn on and able to move. The clown is a bit scary but what clown isn't. The train carries all these good things and more to the children on the other side of the mountain.

A few words in this book might need explaining to children (as with older books terminology and fashion has changed over the years). They may want to know what a "berth" is or what a "parlor car" would be. Another word is "indignantly" that a parent or teacher may need to define.

Nonetheless, this book with its old fashioned styled illustrations and its quaint story is one that children ages 0-3+ would love.
